Mini Thon held annual carnival
The Mini Thon Carnival, known as the main event for Mini Thon, was held on Friday, May 12th from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Boys’ and Girls’ Gym at Pottsville Area High School. There were two food trucks during the whole event on Elk Ave, Mitchell’s Grill and Catering, and Heritage Hill Ice Cream. Admission for the event was $5.00 but anyone that came in the Carnival T-shirt that was sold for this year’s event was granted free admission.
In the Boys’ Gym students could play both volleyball and basketball. In the Girls Gym, there were typical carnival games like ring toss, knocking over cans, along with much more.
Around 6:30 PM there were two guest speakers talking about THON and the Four Diamonds Foundation. They had also revealed their total raised prior to the end of the evening.
“We hoped that students and faculty would come out and support our event,” Miss Crystal Pugh said. “The Mini-THON members have worked really hard this year in meeting their fundraising goal of $10,000.00, which they are very close to,” Pugh said.
All the money that was raised went to the Four Diamonds Foundation and Penn State Milton Hershey. This money helps families with medical costs that aren’t covered by their insurance, and helps with other needs that the children have, whether it’s dietary needs, music therapy, etc.
The money raised throughout the year from various fundraisers goes towards research and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. Pugh said, “We hope that one day no one hears, ‘Your child has a form of pediatric cancer,’”.
