Miss Peregrine’s opens big at the box office (computer art)
Another movie, another spin-off of a book. Most people say that a movie adaptation can never top the book that it is based on, but Tim Burton gives this theory a run for its money. His latest movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, opened at number one with $28.5 million over the weekend. According to USA Today, this is Burton’s seventh movie to be released that opened in the number one spot.
Based on Ransom Riggs’ book of the same name, Miss Peregrine’s is a story about Jacob, a teenager from Florida, who travels to an island to discover the dilapidated home of Miss Peregrine. By studying the island and the home itself, Jacob realizes that this location was the home for “peculiar” and quite possibly dangerous children. The movie encompasses ideas of embracing your differences and saving yourself from the world’s judgement.
The 21st Century Fox Film received fairly positive reviews due to its appeal to various age groups. Although the exposition of the movie to drags a bit, Burton adds the necessary components into this part of the movie to make it more interesting and appealing. He uses his talented mind to establish a strange setting, while at the same time making the famous “movie magic” that he is known so well for. From the rising action to the concluding scene, the movie embodies the action and emotion that only Burton is able to convey.
The characters themselves are a major factor in this movie magic. Miss Peregrine, played by Eva Green, is both unique and different, much like the entire movie is. Green takes the character of Miss Peregrine and makes it her own. She efficiently works with Burton’s visuals to show viewers the little things that make Miss Peregrine the character that she is.
Green’s unique way of showing the times when she transforms from her “human” look into a peregrine falcon shows the positive impact that her acting has on the movie. Switching from one character to a completely different character is a challenge, but Green does it with ease.
“From what I’ve heard so far, Miss Peregrine’s is supposed to be very good. I never read the book, but I am really excited to go see the movie,” junior Tobias Serrian said. “The trailers for the movie look interesting and action-packed, so I hope that it lives up to my expectations.”
Despite the rough start in the exposition, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children took the box office and viewers by storm this past weekend. The results shows this is a movie that you do not want to miss.
Miss Peregrine’s is now being shown daily at the Schuylkill Mall Theater in Frackville. Showtimes can be found at www.pearltheatres.com.
