As Easter approaches, Lent is being celebrated by approximately 1.2 billion people across the world. Lent is a 40 day period, starting on Ash Wednesday, which represents the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, which is also part of the liturgical year. This year, Lent starts on March 5th, and ends on Thursday, April 17th.
During the Lent period, people often choose something to give up, whether it’s a bad habit, or and unhealthy food. Additionally, meat is not to be eaten on Fridays during Lent. People do this in honor of Jesus, as well as to show self-discipline.
Overall, Lent is a period of fasting, prayer, and peace, with a purpose to prepare for the celebration of Jesus on Easter Day. This time is also seen as a period to grow closer to God.
