As the fall sports season comes to a close, winter sports are just around the corner, with the official first practices being Friday, November 15th. Here at Pottsville, we have winter sports such as Swimming and Diving, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Wrestling. During the preseason, these sports have open practices or workouts that are open to anyone interested. By doing this, coaches are gathering an estimate on their rosters, helping players learn and improve, and giving high school students the opportunity to play.
As many students here at Pottsville participate in a sport, whether it is in the fall, winter, or spring, it is always fun to try new things. For Girls Basketball, there are about ten new girls trying out, as well for the swim team, with 9 new members.
For most people, playing a sport is usually because they enjoy it or are good at it, but there are many more aspects to athletics than that. Winter sports can benefit students by building character, gaining confidence, and showing school spirit. Although sports are not always everybody’s thing, they are a great way to try something new, and step out of your comfort zone.
“We are all very excited for this upcoming season, with high expectations for our team as a whole. We have a lot of new players joining the team as well as old ones staying. We Hope to win more games, and make the playoffs this year!” sophomore Jo Barnhart said.
