With the spring musical approaching, the drama cast is hard at work after school for their production of the Pirate Queen. The Pottsville Area High School drama department is led by Mrs. María Malek, Mrs. Amy Babcock, and Mrs. Kim Rismiller. The play will be held on March 26, 27, 28, and 29. It will start at 7:00pm each day except Sunday. On Sunday the play will begin at 2:00pm.

Pottsville has been known for its plays and for its large cast group. This drama cast consists of 37 members. The Pirate Queenis based on the true story of Grace O’Malley and her adventures throughout England, especially those with the Queen. Audience members will see Grace travel through the many scenes and situations she faces.

Stage crew is a group of students who participate in building the stage props for the play. Some of their jobs are preparing the props, setting up for the next scene and making sure the production runs smoothly.

Senior Riley Babcock said, “My favorite part about stage crew is getting to work with my mom, who is the adviser. I really enjoy being the part of the show that makes everything run smoothly. It is something I am good at because it takes a certain type of thinking I enjoy.”

Pit Band includes a group of students in the district and a group of others who aren’t in the district. They spend many hours rehearsing for the musical in order to make their production a success.

Junior Christian Honicker said,”I like to do whatever I can to support the performing arts and all of my friends involved with it, and Pit Band is one way of doing so. Not to mention, it’s just fun. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.

Junior Jake Montgomery said, “My favorite part of drama is the long lasting friendships and memories I made, which is also why I signed up to be a part of drama club, along with being more artistic and performing great music. I get the amazing feeling of working with talented people to create something so special out of the drama club.”
