Rihanna took the stage from the sky this year at the 2023 Super Bowl. She ended her performance with her 2012 hit song, Diamonds.

Super Bowl LVII has just ended with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday. Most students and staff celebrated the Super Bowl by turning on Fox at 6:30 pm. Not all students at Pottsville Area High School were hoping the Philadelphia Eagles took the win, some were counting on the Chiefs who successfully did just that.

“I think that the game was a very close matchup compared to past Super Bowls,” senior Noah Stevenson said. “I was hoping the Kansas City Chiefs would win because I am a Washington fan.”

The halftime show was presented by hip-hop/rap artist Rihanna and sponsored by Apple Music. During the 13-minute halftime show, she started the performance on a stage high at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. While singing her well-known songs, Rihanna revealed her pregnancy with her second child. “The halftime show was also fun to watch because Rihanna has not performed for a while,” Stevenson said. Between songs, Rihanna also promoted her own makeup company, Fenty Beauty. She did not get paid to perform at the 2023 Super Bowl, but the NFL did offer the artist a “union scale”.

“I think that Rihanna was amazing and I was super excited to watch her perform because she’s one of my favorite artists,” sophomore Allegra Hossler said. “I also loved the surprise baby bump she showed off last night.”

“I personally don’t watch a lot of football, but since my family likes the Eagles I was rooting for them,” senior Lauren Kane said. “Unfortunately they didn’t win, but seeing Rihanna perform along with her pregnancy announcement was a win for me!”

According to Bleacher Report, on Sunday night, approximately 113 million people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl and approximately 118.7 million people watched the halftime show.

“I went to Philadelphia with my friends to enjoy the experience with other Eagles fans,” senior Wyatt Selinko said. “I was upset that Philly lost the Super Bowl but I will be looking forward to next year’s season.”

Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21-of-27 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 44 yards on six carries on Super Bowl Sunday. He did this all with a low-grade high ankle sprain which he injured in late January. Backup Chad Henne had to be warmed up after Mahomes limped off the field in the late second quarter. Down 14-24, Mahomes led his team successfully and was named the MVP of Super Bowl  LVII. The final score of the football game was 38-35.
