A quick look at the art of Sadie Bowman
When junior Sadie Bowman stepped into an art room when she was in elementary school, she immediately knew she had a passion for creating various art pieces.
EW: What was your inspiration behind “Caught in Headlights”?
SB: Some of my inspiration comes from our own area, which is obviously filled with deer who, consequently, find themselves on the road.
EW: What did you seem to struggle with while completing this piece?
SB: I struggled with contrast and making sure everything looks like it’s on the same plane.
EW: Did you learn any new techniques while creating this?
SB: I realized that the new iPads gave way for a simple, more modern technique. Taking a picture of an object that you want to incorporate into a piece and then editing it into black and white can help with showing where subtle highlights and shadows are.
EW: How do you come up with ideas for your artwork?
SB: For coming up with ideas, I usually do several sketches to get own a vague understanding of what the piece will look like or what I think should be in it. I then flesh out the one that strikes me as the best.
EW: What is your favorite medium to work with?
SB: My favorite medium would probably be charcoal, but I still have a few others that I would like to try.
EW: What is the best piece of advice that you have received from an art teacher?
SB: The best advice would be to learn to step back, literally. It’s important to step back and look at the work as a whole every once in awhile to make sure it looks like you thought it would. Especially if you’ve been working for a while.
EW: What art classes are you currently enrolled in?
SB: I’m currently taking Painting 1 and Advanced Drawing.
EW: Since you are planning to take AP Studio Art next year, what are you most excited for as being a student in that type of art class?
SB: I am most excited to be able to push myself further [with my art] while learning more and having fun.
