For senior artist Abby Heiser, inspiration is everywhere. After four years at PAHS Abby has accumulated a deep rooted portfolio of both tangible and intangible art work. Whether you’re watching her up on stage or admiring a painting of hers, art is an eminent force in Abby’s high school career.
Heiser’s artistic journey doesn’t have a direct point of origin, art is everywhere around her. “I think I could be inspired by anything”, she explains, “you should always be looking for inspiration.”
One of her greatest inspirations comes from the great British artist Louis Wain. Wain is known for his expressive cat portraits. His eclectic style is reminiscent in Heiser’s works, “I love cats. And animals in general. His work is so colorful, so emotional. I see that in my own paintings”
Although Heiser is proficient in several mediums and art styles, her preferred artistic medium is oil paint. This medium won her two best in show awards at the Schuylkill County Fair. “I didn’t expect to win either times,” she admits.
Yet her artistic life is not bound to a canvas.
Heiser is also an actor in the school drama program, which just closed their senior show Working. “Being up there on stage—it’s exciting. I was so nervous as a freshman, but doing it four years has helped.” “I’m still a nervous wreck,” she adds.
Abby is also an AP 2D Art student,Heiser builds her work around an essential question—one that defines her entire portfolio.
“How can we use animals to symbolize the way entertainment influences us?”
This question conveys a great deal of creativity and artistic focus for Heiser. “I struggle with expressing myself,” she says. “So I do that through animals. When people look at my art I want them to feel something.”
Her portfolio further reflects themes of identity, perception, and all the ways people consumer media. Through animal imagery, Heiser evokes this to her audience beautifully and skillfully. Inviting viewers to truly think deeply about her work.
Heiser plans to attend Kutztown University, where she’s already been accepted. And while many people doubt the practicality pursuing art, her stance is firm.
“People say art isn’t a good career, especially now with AI and everything digital,” she says “But ignore that. Do what makes you happy. Work hard, and it will work out.”
A message not just for artists, but for anyone looking to pursue what they’re passionate about.
For Abby Heiser, art isn’t just a skill. Art is her world, expressed one colorful animal painting at a time.
