“Superkids” character entertains elementary students (video)

December 19 will be a day to remember for kindergarten, first and second graders from John S. Clarke Elementary Center. A character from their reading program, “Superkids,” came for a visit for the day.

“The Superkids reading program is a kindergarten through second grade reading program that teaches kids how to master the alphabet in kindergarten, focus on blending at the first grade level, and then concreting those skills at the second grade level, so when they reach the third grade level, they already know how to read and they transition smoothly from learning to read, to reading to learn,” Mr. Mike Logan, Superkids reading program representative, said.

The Superkids characters have multiple adventures in their stories that correspond to the activities they like to do. Students seem to remember what each of the characters do and the things that are around them because of the first letter of their name. For example, the character who visited the children was Cass. Cass enjoys cooking and is often seen doing so with her cat Coconut. Notice how everything starts with letter “C.”

Cass spent about 15 to 20 minutes in each classroom talking to the kids and asking them questions about their favorite Superkids characters, adventures and what they were hoping to get for Christmas.

“I go to each classroom just talking about which adventures they learned about, and it kind of teaches them more about each character,” Cass said.

After the kids and Cass were done asking questions back and forth, Cass surprised the whole class by bringing in cookies for everyone. According to Cass herself, she stayed up all night before baking the cookies with her cat Coconut. And multiple students, including first graders Evie Hunter and Landon Trout, thought the cookies were top notch.

“My favorite part about today was eating the yummy treats,” Trout said.
