With the arrival of a new sport, many of the students here at PAHS have decided to participate. Bocce ball, a sport that derived from the ancient Roman Empire and closely related to English bowls and French pétanque. Bocce ball is played between two teams, each team plays with four bocce balls differentiated by color. The goal of the game is to roll your team’s ball closer to the pallino than the other team’s ball.
The team consists of 8 students. Seniors Cullen Clarke, Luke Schane, and Julie Szeliga all decided to join the first year sport. Other teammates include Reese Ketner, Aidan Corby, Danhika Zyk, and Faith Schwartz. The team has its first scrimmage on Tuesday following a short week of practice.
Senior and team leader Cullen Clarke said, “ Seeing there was bocce ball was an option I had to try it out. I’m very excited to see what the new sport has to offer. It is a great opportunity to try something new and be closer with some of my friends.”
As the year goes on we will surely find out more about bocce ball as a sport. As a first year sport at PAHS it will be interesting to see how it progresses not just in the first year but also as the years progress.
