The MLB season started just a short month ago and already things that have never happened before are happening. There are teams and players that are doing extremely historical things, such as the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays have started off the year going 29-7, which is the most wins in a teams first 36 games since 1927. As there are teams making history for great things, they’re are also teams making history for the exact opposite. For example, the Oakland A’s (Athletics) are on pace to be one of the the worst teams in Major League history.

While all of these teams are making history there is also a player making history. Shohei Ohtani is doing something that we have never seen done at a major league level before. He has become one of the first players that does both pitching and hitting, and succeeds at doing both of these things. He has not only succeeded he has dominated in both hitting and pitching, launching a .301 batting average with 7 homer runs. While this is extremely impressive for a position player, he has also dominated pitching with a 2.54 earned run average with a 4-0 record.

Coming into the year there were two teams that had very high hopes, but have disappointed in the eyes of the viewers. Those two teams are the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. The teams came into the year with big hopes because they were each first in their divisions last season and went out in the off-season and spent a lot of money.

They each went out and spent a lot of money on pitchers that have yet to pitch a game for them. The Yankees went out and re-signed superstar Aaron Judge who is coming off of one of the greatest individual seasons ever, and got the largest contract in MLB history. After each of these teams finishing first in their divisions last season and going out and spending a lot of money they each find themselves at the bottom of their divisions.

In the MLB so far there have been many surprising teams; however none are bigger than the  Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have been the biggest surprise so far because after last season it was their fourth straight season of finishing last in their division. A month into the current season they are sitting at first in their division and tied for second in the National League. This is shocking because they went out in the off-season and spent very little money and have almost exactly the same team as they had last year. They are being led by an elite season by their star player Bryan Reynalds. He is batting .298 with 5 home runs and 23 runs batted in.

We are only a month into the season and there is still a lot of baseball to be played and we will see how the league changes from here to the end of the season.
